My mom was from Elliott, IA and my dad was from Omaha, NE. My family moved from Omaha, NE to Colorado in 1971 when I was 10 months old. Therefore, whenever we took a family vacation, it meant heading back to Iowa and Nebraska. I have a ton of childhood memories of playing with my cousins and being spoiled by my grandparents. One of the ways they spoiled us was always having ice cream in the freezer when we arrived. Falk’s Ice Cream…Lemon Custard to be more exact. We didn’t have anything like it in Colorado, so it was truly something to look forward to when we went to Elliott. As I became an adult and started my own family, our trips to Elliott became few and far between. My grandparents eventually moved to Colorado in the early 2000’s so my mom could help take care of them. After 72 years of marriage, they both passed away in 2010, 5 months apart. We made the trip to Red Oak, IA two times that year to celebrate their amazing lives, and as we were all reminiscing about our memories, Falk’s Ice Cream came up. I immediately drove over to the Fareway on Broadway St and started looking. I initially couldn’t find any, so I asked an employee if there was any in the back. He said, “Unfortunately they just shut down the business”. I can’t say what came out of my mouth next! He took me back over to the ice cream aisle and to my surprise he found 1 more quart of Lemon Custard! I took it back to the hotel and we all took turns eating right out of the carton. That same carton stayed on top of my cabinets in my kitchen for over 10 years.
Occasionally, I would Google “Falk’s Ice Cream” in hopes it would magically reappear, but to my dismay it never did. Until…. I’m sure I was bored of binge watching every show under the sun since we were all confined to our houses during Covid, so I Googled “Falk’s Ice Cream” again, and what the what…It’s coming back???!!! I started following the Facebook page, and once it was confirmed it was stocked in Red Oak, I planned a little road trip. Yes, from Colorado. I used the excuse that I could see some of my cousins in Omaha, but who was I kidding? We all know why I drove the 9-hour trip. Yes, I drove almost 9 hours to buy 6 gallons of heaven! I didn’t even know how much it cost, but it didn’t matter. It also didn’t matter how much I had to spend on dry ice to get it back to Colorado. That’s the power of childhood memories. That’s the power of what people will do to try to re-live some of those memories. Every bite takes me back to my grandparent’s house on Main Street in Elliott.
Fortunately for me, we do a cousin’s reunion in Red Oak every summer. So, when I started attending a few years ago, I go straight to the Fareway to get a 3-gallon pail to share with the family.
Last month, I decided to take my daughter to see Moulin Rouge at the Orpheum Theater in Omaha. Yes, we drove from Colorado again! And yes, we have ice cream and theaters in Colorado! I was planning on loading up some Falk’s in a cooler and taking back home, but every store I called in Omaha saif they don’t sell it anymore. So, I found a phone number for Falk’s Ice Cream on the internet and thought I would just call them directly to see where I could find it in Omaha. Jenny answered the phone, and we started chatting. I told my story and she said, “Well, when are you going to be in Omaha?” She then said, “How about I just meet you in Omaha and give you the ice cream” At first, I didn’t want to take her up on her generous offer, but she twisted my arm. If she was going to bring 3 gallons from Iowa to Nebraska for me, might as well get 6 gallons! Jenny went one step further. She called the store I was going to get the dry ice at and found out they didn’t have any. She texted me saying, “I will meet you at the Orpheum with the ice cream already boxed up with dry ice. I can’t thank you and your family enough for what you did that day, but also bringing back a part of my childhood I thought would be gone forever.
